Much Wenlock Olympian Games 2010

Well done to all our fencers who competed in the Much Wenlock Olympian Games on Sunday 11 July 2010.
Neil, Lee and Jade competed in the adults individual foil competition. All three did very well given the high standard of fencing.

Neil came 18th and Lee came 14th in the Men's Individual Foil and Jade came 3rd in the Plate in the Ladies Individual Foil.

Lily, Tom and Laurent competed in the U13's team event and also placed 3rd in the plate.

Well done to all who competed and special thanks to Chris Beadling for coaching and support!

Cornhill Cup 2009 - Leicester Team Reports

Cornhill Cup 2009, Rushcliffe School, 19th July 2009

Leicester C

Poule 1:
Woodhouse Eaves A 5-4
3 Blades (?) 4-5

Poule 2:
Leicester A 3-6
Sherwood B 2-7

12th so out

The opener against Woodhouse Eaves A started shakily with first blood to Andy, but the newbies settled in quickly and we duly got down to nailing 5-4 a match that we could probably have won easier, but a win is a win when all’s said and done, and a great way to start any competition.

After a fairly long break we were back in the saddle, this time against 3 Blades. From the off we realised that we would need to contain Benoit in order to get anything out of this one – but we were dragging our heels early on, despite having done our homework on them, and at 4-4 and 4-4 it fell to the captains to go nose to nose and decide it, and he took it on the final point at close range. I will be working hard on my reaction times after that one!

So with 5-4 and 4-5 we were seeded 8th out of the field – full marks to the freshers for that alone!

Vs Leicester A was a typically intra-club encounter with some fights going fully one way, others a bit tighter, and with grudges aside the match ultimately going the way of the form as we know it. I will have Steve one of these days, but for now, it went 3-6 to the A who would deservedly go on to nearly win the cup.

By the time we took on Sherwood B the decline had set in. A tidy unit that blends youth, experience, guile and a tricky left-hander, none were phased by either Janina’s measured footwork or Royston’s spirited determination (he only got the one warning); it was no surprise then that even with Simon carrying a sore elbow they dealt us our widest margin of the day ending it, and whatever feint hopes we still had of appearing in the next stage, with ample breathing space at 2-7, and yes, with lessons learnt – on our part – I hope!

Despite finishing 12th(?), I was very impressed by the quality and application of skills that both Royston and Janina brought to the piste, not to ignore too their determination to fight for tough points under pressure. Overall it bodes well for future competitions whether team or individual, and shows that Leicester Fencing Club is capable of turning out effective and up-for-it-competitive fencers all the year round.

Cornhill Cup 2009

Congratulations to all the teams who entered the competition yesterday!

A special congratulations to Lee Garner, Steve Smith and Gemma Lambell for getting a SILVER medal this year. There was some stiff competition amongst some dubious judging!

There was also a healthy mix of Grade 1, Grade 2, Intermediate and Advanced fencers.
